#138 The impact of planning on End-of-Life Care  with Nicola Bonthron

In this episode it is my real pleasure talking to my ex colleague and very dear friend Nicky Bonthron.

Our careers have crossed paths over the years and we have worked together in different palliative care teams in hospices and acute hospitals.

Nicky generously shares her experiences of caring for four people at the end of life and there are so many powerful messages in the stories.

Nicky talks about the importance of planning, the difference that the ReSPECT process made and why we need to talk more about Ordinary Dying.

Key messages

  • The episode explores Advance Care Planning through personal and professional experiences, focusing on the importance of planning ahead for end-of-life care.

  • Nicky Bonthron shares her journey as a carer for her mother, father, aunt, and neighbor, each with unique end-of-life trajectories and care needs.

  • The ReSPECT process (Recommended Summary Plan for Emergency Care and Treatment) is highlighted as a crucial tool for ensuring patient wishes are respected and guiding emergency responders.

  • The value of open conversations about death, dying, and care preferences is emphasised, reducing trauma and confusion for families and carers.

  • Professional experience in palliative care helped Nicky navigate complex situations, but she notes the need for better public understanding of the dying process.

  • Practical steps for personal planning are discussed, including making a will, setting up a lasting power of attorney, writing a letter of wishes, and organising important documents.

  • The emotional and logistical challenges of caring for loved ones at the end of life are candidly discussed, with advice on seeking support and sharing responsibilities.

  • The episode encourages listeners to have Advance Care planning Conversations and document their wishes to ease the burden on loved ones.
