#59 Advance Care Planning from Student Nurse to PhD Student

Stephanie Craig is a Registered Nurse and a PhD Student at Queen’s University Belfast. Since qualifying Steph has worked on a number of projects including the implementation of an Advance Care Planning educational tool for undergraduate nursing students.

I connected with Steph on Twitter and was keen to learn what was covered in Steph’s education about Advance Care Planning as a student nurse and how this translated into practice.

We talk about the fabulous project work that Steph has been involved with since qualifying and the difference this is making for nurses of tomorrow – building their confidence to learn, do and share Advance Care Planning skills.

Key messages from guest

  • Steph graduated in 2021; as a student nurse Steph had an introduction to palliative care and awareness of palliative care for non malignant disease.

  • Advance Care Planning was something Steph was made aware of throughout training.

  • The importance of finding a balance between living well and planning for end of life can be a challenge to find.

  • We reflect on the lack of education about Lasting Power of Attorney delivered during or post training.

  • Steph talks about how communication skills are consolidated once qualified and that role play in training helped.

  • Advance Care Planning was not specifically focused on in role play for  communication skills.

  • Steph describes her work in a Care Home and the development of an Advance Care Planning resource developed during COVID-19.

  • Steph reflects on how the “doing” gap for Advance Care Planning has been addressed for student nurses.
